| WHAT IS 'ACTIVE LEARNING'? |
 |
Perhaps this can be best put into perspective through reference to its opposite: the passive process of traditional 'surface learning' where answers already found are committed to memory and recalled at exam time.
'Active Learning' defines the nature of the activities that Edworks offers its students through its innovative, personalised programs. It means firstly, that learning is student-centred – that the learning environment encourages a student's active construction of knowledge and the development of skills where open-ended activities and problem-solving are used to promote independent thinking and greater understanding. Thus, students move beyond their innate ability and are empowered to think creatively and critically and to use their initiative.
Importantly, students are shown that progressive education and being successful are not about simply getting the answer right. It is all about understanding the process involved at arriving at solutions.
An Edworks tutor facilitates this learning process by guiding, nurturing and mentoring the student, as opposed to 'transmitting information' that is later recycled passively through classroom assessment.
